Snoring

Snoring is caused by the obstructed air movement during breathing while asleep. It is sometimes caused by the relaxation of the uvula muscle and soft palate to partly block the airway, or a result of jaw misposition, or even obesity and ingesting certain drugs which cause muscle relaxation. Although snoring is often considered a negligeable nuisance, sometimes it could prove to be a lifestyle impairment such as sleep deprivation, or a disturbance to your sleeping partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do we snore?

Snoring is the audible vibration of the respiratory structures due to obstructed air movement during breathing whilst sleeping. This happens because these parts of the body relax and narrow when you’re asleep. Laxity of the soft palate causes an exacerbation of these symptoms for many people, meaning snoring and apnoea (a condition where the airway is temporarily blocked) is worse.

45% of men and 30% of women snore on regular basis

Palatal snoring is by far the most common type of snoring and is the cause of snoring in 85% of individuals. The Fotona Laser treats palatal snoring.

Snoring and Apnea can affect people more if they:

  • Smoke
  • Drink excessively
  • Are overweight
  • Sleep on their back
How Fotona Laser works?

Nightlase uses gentle laser energy in a non-invasive way to stimulate collagen production, tightening and lifting tissue inside the mouth and at the back of the throat (soft palate). It uses patented technology unique to Fotona, stimulating collagen with no damage to the skin or tissue in a safe and effective way.

Is a course of treatments needed?

Yes! For optimal results, patients should undergo 3 separate treatment sessions over a period of 6 weeks; Day 1, Day 15 and Day 45. Following this, patients may need an annual 1 off top up session or as and when they feel their snoring/apnea symptoms are worsening.

Does it hurt?

Just like visiting the dentist, patients can often feel a bit uneasy at the prospect of intraoral treatments, but we can assure you that Nightlase is a gentle, painless laser treatment.

Patients can be fitted with a small mouthguard if needed or just intermittently hold their mouth open saying “Aaaarrrrhhh” to ensure the mouth stays open and comfortable throughout the session. The laser energy will simply feel warm and tingly and does not require anesthesia.
